Argical M1200S is a type of pozzolan known as metakaolin, produced by calcination and micronisation of a high-quality kaolinitic clay. Available in 15kg bags.
It offers a high pozzolanic index showing relatively potent and quick reactivity, making it quite a cost-effective addition.
For lime mortars, Argical chemically bonds very effectively with lime (calcium hydroxide). As a result, we would advise using it with caution in traditional lime mortars, as it can create excessively strong mortar unintentionally, which is problematic for the restoration and conservation of solid-walled buildings.
Volumetric batching should be done consistently with a measured quantity. Addition by eye or by shovel is strongly advised against.
Suitable for use with lime mortars, renders, cements and concretes. The addition rate in non-hydraulic lime mortars is advised at 5 to 10% by volume of the binder.
Pozzolans, such as metakaolin, should be used with care and only specified by experienced tradespeople who understand how they can affect the material’s performance and workability.

Pozzolan dosage should be by volume of binder; so for every 15L of lime you use, you’d add 10%, or 1.5L of Argical M1200S. For our ready-mixed lime putty mortars, a 10% addition would be approximately 330ml per 25 kg bag of mortar.
While the answer is technically yes, we advise against it. The strength increase is magnified in combination with NHLs, so it’s a little too easy to make excessively strong mortars.
Whilst you can get a non-hydraulic mortar above the typical strength required for frost resistance, there are other considerations to be taken into account. During cold weather, carbonation slows significantly, increasing the risk of lime bleed when wind-driven rain or other moisture sources can penetrate the surface. So, whilst you can reduce the frost risk, it doesn’t solve all winter working issues.
At the same time as the sand. Ensure there is sufficient mixing to break down any clumps of powder, so semi-dry mortar mixing is recommended where possible.
The Argical M1200S has an open time, when mixed with lime, between 10 and 18 hours, although this is temperature dependent, with hotter temperatures setting faster. Once the set has started, it cannot be knocked back up, and any remaining mortar must be disposed of.
Argical is a fine powder with a moderate to high-water requirement. As a result, it can significantly stiffen a mortar when introduced into the mixer. While it might appear that the material is setting, it is simply stiffening and will require more water to reach a workable consistency.
