Otterbein CALCIDUR® NHL2 is natural hydraulic lime, the weakest strength of the three classifications for NHL and a popular choice for conserving and restoring historic and solid-walled buildings. Available in a 25kg bag.
Manufactured in the heart of Germany since 1889, Otterbein is known for its high-quality and reliable range of natural hydraulic limes.
We typically advise using NHL2 or weaker to repair traditionally constructed buildings, as it creates highly breathable mortars and renders. This breathability allows moisture to pass through, helping to reduce moisture build-up, damp, mould and damage to the building fabric over time in solid-walled buildings where moisture is always present within the building fabric.
However, an NHL3.5 or NHL5 may be more appropriate for exposed locations requiring additional strength. Browse our range of sands for lime mortars, renders and plasters.

We always advise following best practices for curing and protecting fresh lime mortars and renders from direct sunlight and wind using hessian sheeting, which acts as a barrier between the freshly applied lime and the environment. Store on pallets in covered and dry conditions, free of draft. Shelf life is 6 months maximum.
