Otterbein Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL)

Natural Hydraulic Lime binders for mortars, renders and plasters. Available in three strengths: NHL2 and NHL3.5.

NHL's have a hydraulic set and can be used in damp conditions and will produce an earlier resistance to frost than Non-Hydraulic (e.g. Lime Putty based mortars).

Key Benefits

  • Excellent vapour permeability - Amongst the highest free lime (Ca(OH2) content of all commercially available NHL’s
  • Reduces the risk of cracking - Low modulus of elasticity makes Otterbein suitable for large aspects & reduces the risk of cracking
  • Environmentally Friendly - Produces less CO2 during production and absorbs CO2 during set.
  • Old and New - Suitable for use on most aspects of building conservation and relevant new build applications.

Description

Otterbein NHL’s are a light tan, brown binder used for making Lime Mortars and Renders. Otterbein NHL’s all have a higher free lime content than most other NHL’s which can offer distinct advantages from the point of workability.

Otterbein like most NHL’s will set hard and can be used in more aggressive, damp environments producing an earlier (chemical) set with a greater resistance to frost than pure Non-hydraulic Limes. However, given their higher freelime content it might be prudent to avoid their use in certain applications.

Available in two strengths: NHL2 and NHL3.5 Natural Hydraulic Limes (NHL) are made from limestone containing impurities which enable a hydraulic set. They are supplied as dry powders, and begin to set through a chemical reaction known as hydration, when water is added.

Area of Use

NHLs are suitable for use in a variety of situations where vapour permeability is important. Generally, the more exposed to the elements the application is, the harder the material. A hard mortar should never be used over a softer one, so NHL2 or a lime putty mortar should be used for softer backgrounds.
