Pigments have been used since pre-historic times worldwide and remain popular for those creating breathable lime mortars or limewashes for traditional or historic solid-walled buildings.

Our pigments are a collection of natural, synthetic, and mixed pigments chosen for their quality, versatility, and popularity. Whether you’re looking to create a classic Suffolk Pink or a creamy Cotswold Yellow, our collection of pigments can help bring your vision to life.

The collection features 22 colours. Please note that colour is subjective and always open to interpretation. Please note that your pigment may appear slightly lighter or brighter when viewed in the bag.

  • Versatile and easy-to-use
  • Ideal for adding colour to limewash, lime mortars, renders or plasters, concrete or cement
  • UV and alkali stable after application

Suitable for both internal and external applications. Suitable for various applications, including adding colour to limewash, lime mortars, lime render, lime plasters and concrete.

For mortar applications, ensure pigments are measured carefully before mixing to reduce variation from batch to batch. Gradually add pigments to your mix and carefully disperse them to help achieve a consistent and uniform colour. Avoid leaving clumps of pigment within the mix. We would generally recommend pre-blending the pigment with some lime using a forced action mixer like a plastering whisk, or mixing it with hot water to aid in dispersion before adding it into the mixer.

Variations in the sand and lime content from volumetric mixing can change the colour of the mortar, so keep this in mind when choosing your materials.

The addition of pigment can impact the strength of the mortar. In general, we typically advise a limit of 10kg per tonne of lime mortar.

For limewash applications, mix the pigment with a small amount of clean potable water to form a paste or slurry. This preparatory step assists with fully saturating the pigment and preventing dry clumps that can cause heavily pigmented spots and an uneven finish. The addition of pigment will vary depending on several factors, including the pigment used and the colour you aim to achieve. Generally, we recommend a maximum ratio of 20 parts limewash to 1 part pigment paste. For guidance on applying limewash, see our guide How to Apply Limewash Successfully. For those unfamiliar with mixing limewash and pigments or looking for a ready-to-use option, browse our range of premixed limewash.

For all applications, determining the right amount of pigment for a desired colour is part science, part art. Combining best practices, experience, and patience will assist you in achieving your ideal shade.

FAQs

Our pigments are a mix of natural, synthetic and mixed for more complex colour pigments. Please note that even natural pigments will undergo some refining process. For specific information on the composition of a pigment colour, please get in touch.

The amount of pigment you should add to make a mortar, render, or limewash will vary depending on several factors, including the pigment used and the colour you aim to achieve. Generally, we advise adding pigment with precision, measuring the pigment, mixing thoroughly, and then testing the colour by applying it to a separate sample panel or similar to confirm the colour suits your requirements. A good working limit would be 10% of the weight of the binder in pigment, so for example 25 kg of lime should not have more than 2.5 kg added. We recognize this can be higher, but the risk of shrinkage cracking can become problematic.

In general, our pigments are UV-stable. However, the longevity of the colour will inevitably vary by pigment and environmental conditions of the area in which the pigment is applied. Most pigments will remain vibrant for years to come.

In general, our pigments are alkali stable. It’s worth noting that greens and blues can degrade if left in an alkali solution. As part of best practice, we advise against leaving pigments in a wet alkali solution for extended periods of time.
