Belmix Flock Fibres are specifically engineered high-performance multifilament polypropylene fibres to replace the historic use of animal hair in a lime mortar. Available in 18mm lengths in a 0.9kg or 25kg bag.

Easy to use and doesn’t require teasing into the mixer like animal hair. The flocking process allows for a greater surface contact area for the mortar matrix.

Budget-friendly and easy to use, these fibres are an effective alternative to animal hair, assisting with reducing the potential of cracking and shrinkage and improving a lime mortar’s impact resistance.

  • Budget-friendly and effective alternative to traditional animal hair
  • Ideal for renders on wooden lathing
  • Easy to use and doesn't require teasing into the mixer like animal hair
  • Assists with mitigating cracking and plastic shrinkage
  • Can aid in controlling shrinkage on high-suction backgrounds
  • Improve impact resistance of lime mortars
  • Can increase the load spread of lime render
  • Reduces rebound and material waste in sprayed render

Suitable for use with lime mortars, renders and plasters. Addition rates will vary according to the application but typically range between 0.5-2kg per tonne of mortar.

Once added into the mortar or render, ensure that the Belmix Flock Fibres are distributed evenly throughout the mix. As general guidance, several minutes of thorough mixing is typically sufficient.

FAQs

Animal hair is undoubtedly the traditional choice. Historic mortars often use a range of animal hair, but it’s not uncommon to find hair from goats, cows, or horses. Modern synthetic fibres are a budget-friendly and effective alternative that can be easily added to the mixer without teasing. Both assist with flexural and tensile strength and help reduce the likelihood of cracking and shrinkage for renders and plasters. An in-house favourite is our Bellmix Flock fibres, which allow for a greater surface contact area for the mortar matrix.

The required amount will vary depending on the fibres used and the application. Our guide on Adding Hair or Fibres to Lime Mortar is a great start to learning more about the process.
