Frequently Asked Questions

About Lime/ Traditional building

Question: What’s the mix ratio and coverage for putty?

Answer: Our premixed putty mortars are made with 1 part putty and 3 parts sand (by volume). Coverage for repointing is impossible due to the variables of each building (stone type, joint width, depth etc.). As a general rule of thumb, we would work on 1 tonne of sand and ten tubs of putty, giving coverage in the region of 50m2 at 25mm depth. Alternatively, we have our premixed mortars, which would cover the area of 40m2 at 25mm depth per tonne or 1m2 at 25mm per 25kg bag.

Breathable Paints

Question: How do I know if the paint is breathable?

Answer: When looking for breathable paint, there are two common ways to check how breathable it is. The first is the SD (Steam Diffusion) value, a German method for measuring breathability. For a paint to be classed as breathable, it should have an SD value of 1 or lower; the lower the value, the more breathable the paint. The other method used to measure breathability is the moisture vapour transmission rate (MVTR). It measures the amount of water vapour (in grams) able to pass through the paint surface over 24 hours. The higher the figure, the more water vapour that can pass through, and therefore the more breathable.
